Janet has an advisory and civil litigation practice with a focus in the areas of health, privacy and access to information and cybersecurity.
Janet leads the health law team in the St. John’s office. She defends healthcare organizations and professionals in medical malpractice claims. She also provides situational advice to healthcare organizations on a diverse range of topics including adverse event management and disclosure; consent and capacity; statutory interpretation; regulatory compliance; corporate governance; and risk management.
Janet regularly advises public bodies and private enterprises regarding compliance with the relevant privacy and access to information regulatory regime. Her work encompasses advice regarding collection, use and disclosure of personal information; assistance with responding to access to information requests and appeals; and guiding investigations and responses to cybersecurity and privacy breaches. She acted as counsel to the Regional Health Authorities in Newfoundland and Labrador in response to one of the largest cybersecurity incidents in Canadian history.
Janet’s class action practice includes complex medical malpractice claims and privacy breach claims.
She has appeared at all levels of Court in Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as, as counsel at a Commission of Inquiry. She has also assisted clients with statutory review proceedings.
