The Honourable J. Michael MacDonald appointed to the Order of Canada

We are delighted to share that The Honourable J. Michael MacDonald, Counsel to the Firm, former Chief Justice of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal and Chief Justice of Nova Scotia, has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.

This national recognition reflects Michael’s unwavering dedication to justice, equity, and public service. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has been a champion for access to justice, judicial outreach, and meaningful reform within Canada’s legal system. Most recently, his leadership as Chair of the Mass Casualty Commission demonstrated his deep commitment to advancing positive, lasting change on issues of national importance.

Michael’s impact extends far beyond the courtroom. His ongoing community involvement, thoughtful mentorship, and service across the legal profession exemplify the Order of Canada’s guiding motto: “They desire a better country.”

Already a recipient of the Order of Nova Scotia and multiple honorary degrees, this latest honour is a testament to the respect he has earned across the country, and to a career defined by integrity, empathy, and thoughtful leadership.

Please join us in congratulating Michael on this extraordinary achievement.
