Fredericton Partner Sheila Mecking named a Lexpert Rising Star for her outstanding contributions to the practice of law and to her community

Honouring excellence in legal practice across Canada, Sheila Mecking, Partner in our Fredericton office, has been named a 2025 recipient of the Lexpert® Rising Star: Leading Lawyer Under 40 award.

As one of Atlantic Canada’s leading bilingual lawyers, Sheila has built a robust and highly regarded practice dedicated to regulated professions, while maintaining a broad and growing labour and employment practice. She is consistently among the Firm’s top performers, advising regulators and decision makers on compliance, due process and complex governance issues in high-stakes discipline matters.

Sheila brings extensive leadership and governance experience through her longstanding commitment to her community. She has served on the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters Fredericton, and as Chair of the Board of Service de Garde l’Envolée, where she helped guide the organization through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. She also supports not-for-profit organizations by delivering targeted education sessions on preventing sexual abuse of vulnerable populations and by helping boards develop accessible, effective training and policies. In addition, she volunteers with her regional minor hockey association.

A leader within the Firm, Sheila became a Partner in 2020 and, in 2022, was elected the youngest member ever to serve on the Firm’s Partnership Board. She currently sits on the Human Resources and Governance Committee and is a former member of the DEI Committee. Sheila now co-leads the Firm’s largest practice group, Labour & Employment, comprised of more than sixty lawyers across the region. In this role, she drives numerous continuing legal education and business development initiatives, while mentoring lawyers at all stages of practice. Her strategic, proactive and collaborative leadership has significantly shaped the growth and national reputation of the Firm’s Professional Regulation and Labour & Employment groups. Equally, her thoughtful mentorship style has had a lasting impact on Associates across the Firm.

Sheila’s commitment to innovation in client service distinguishes her as a forward-thinking leader. Supported by her completion of the Osgoode Advanced Certificate in Workplace Investigations in 2022, Sheila has developed a national investigations and training offering that continues to grow in scope and impact. She is recognized for her thoughtful, balanced approach to complex workplace matters and for her leadership in shaping investigation best practices across the Firm.

Winners of the Lexpert Rising Star award demonstrate exceptional professional achievement, meaningful contributions to the legal profession, organizational leadership, innovative client service, and strong community involvement, qualities that Sheila exemplifies in her practice every day.
